2010 A reflection

Helloo! I hope you all had a lovely holiday.
It's that awkward time between Christmas and New Year where you either cause yourself stress trying to shop in the sales, or you hide out at home and watch DVDs - I opted for the latter, so I could contemplate 2010's highlights!

It's been a random year. Aside from having a mind-numbingly dull office job, my illustration work is doing well and I've had alot of really great projects.come my way this year.  I've been lucky enough to get involved with Graduate Fashion Week designing the lookbook for Northumbria, it was a huge project - full of fashion related dramas, but it was an amazing to work on (and a good learning curve for me).

(May/June 2010)

I've been fortunate to have my work published in a number of magazines and blogs this year, I've loved being involved in Oh Comely, Ballad Of and Amelias - a couple of my fav mags!

In Sept. I exhibited some work at Birmingham Zine Festival and Richmix London which was alot of fun and met some interesting people (note to self: in future, don't wait til 2 days before to invite people to it!)

(Sept 2010)

And more recently in October, myself and 5 other girls formed a collective Tea & Crayons, to collaborate and share illustrationy things. We've actually just been featured in the Tigerprint blog this week - have a looksee here

I don't know where this year has gone, it's gone really fast! If you haven't seen my website I've recently updated it with lots of new work so please join my mailing list, I'm going to put together my first newsletter soon

Have a wonderful New Years eve whatever you're doing. I have a few things in the works to share with you very soon.
I'm off to make up some new years resolutions for 2011 I need to stick to :)

Fav music of 2010

I make a list every of my fav albums of 2010, and I can't remember if I posted it last year, but I'd thought I'd share it this year.
This year has been a really random year for music, it took me a while to narrow down my favourites, because they're all so different

I managed to get the list down to 27 and then forced myself to make a top 10, so here it is:

Blood red, shoes, Two door cinema club, The National, Radio Dept, Crystal castles, Foals, Dead weather, Arcade fire, Laura Marling, Sleigh Bells

Albums also worthy of a mention are Sun Kil Moon, Deerhunter, Zola Jesus, Yaesayer, LCD soundsystem, MIA, Beach House, Everything everything, Agnes Obel, Warpaint, Summer Camp, Fever Ray, Drums of Death, Caribou, Delphic.and Bonobo/Andreya Triana.

And a couple of my fav songs

It's been a long time coming, but my website is finally back online!  Many thanks to my friend Neal who helped me with some of the technical stuff - html stresses me out. Hopefully this'll be easier to update. I still have a few bits to add and work on, but the majority of the site is there yay

Let me know what you think :)

Illustration Rally: Feature

The lovely Nat over at one of my fav blogs, Illustration Rally featured me on her site yesterday and wrote some very nice words about my work :)

"Busy fashion illustrator Rachel creates some truly stunning hand drawn illustration that proves that raw mechanical skill gained through observation and training is still one of the best ways to present ideas and capture the imagination of the viewer..." (Read the full article)

Tea & Crayons illustrate 'Home'

This week it was my turn to choose a theme for us to illustrate over at our T&C collective, and my theme for us was 'Home'.

Magpies always fascinated me, theres alot of myth surrounding the birds, but they really just remind me of Newcastle... (read more at Tea & Crayons Collective)

Don't Forget To Write

This was my contribution to Ballad Of Magazine's 4th issue, the Ballad Of Nanny Floff - but I didn't get chance to finish it before the deadline as I was in the middle of moving house and what not, but I finally finished the piece a few weeks ago and the lovely Lindsey & Claire featured it on their websitey. Yay!
Will be more organised next time, promise!
Much love x
I will have prints available soon

Hello Monday

I hope you all had a nice weekend!

Mine consisted of cake, hot chocolate, carousels, vintage shops, snow and Christmas markets.

I spent a few days in Bath, which was lovely. Went to a charming little place called Hansel & Gretels for coffee and Christmas decorations - it's an tiny place with a whole wall full of cuckoo clocks that chimed randomly!

Camera-less photography

I went to the V&A in London this weekend to see the Shadow Catchers exhibition. I didn't really know much about photograms and camera-free photography before, I'd seen some of these as prints but I'd never really understood how they were made.  The whole process is really interesting.
These images by Susan Derges are created from the River Taw in Devonshire.

SHOWCASE @ Richmix

Showcase exhibition was a success last night! Many thanks to all that came down to see the show and made my day! The show was good - if a little surreal, I wasn't expecting the improv comedy act but they were really funny!
This was the first time Showcase was at the new venue Richmix - its a really good space, much bigger than cafe 1001.
I took a few pics

I took a few commissioned illustrations, a couple originals and some new pieces to display.  I'll have the new prints on my etsy shop soon too.

London Fashion Week - Jasper Garvida

I was asked by the lovely Katie Antoniou of Amelias Mag to illustrate a look from the Jasper Garvida SS11 collection 'Belle' for London Fashion Week. Click here to read the full article...

His collection is gorgeous, I want to wear it all
