Us Tea & Crayons girls have been busy gathering some promotional bits and bobs over the last few weeks for our big mailing we're putting together, and our badges and stickers have arrived this week. Over the weekend, I found a little link via the wonderful world of twitter to a open call for illustrators to draw Lady Gaga for her new column in V Magazine. I found out about the competition quite late on so I've only just got around to blogging it.

Personally, I'm not a massive fan of the Gaga (I am a fan of V Magazine though) but she's always a crazy character in what she wears and does, so I thought she would be quite fun to illustrate, so here's what I did : )

Pick Me Up

Myself and fellow crayonette Rachel Lewis went along to the Pick Me Up graphic art fair at Somerset House over the weekend. We met up with lovely illustrators Jo Cheung, Emma Cowley, June Chanpoomidole and Emma Block to had a little look around! An ideal sunday day out.

The place is packed full of illustration, design, typography, collectives, books, prints and inspiring creative types. The exhibition is on until the 27th March, so if you're in or around London and get a chance, I definitely recommend popping in.

(Nicely designed flyer too).

I love a nice bit of typography, and there was alot on offer at the exhibition, one of my favourite illustrators Kate Moross made an appearance with her colourful prints.

There's alot of letterpress artwork and screen prints on display. It's nice to see the more traditional hand crafted methods of printing are still around, I must get back in to screen printing this year.

I took a picture of the letter R.

It was alot of fun, I think I need to go back and go round again, there's so much to take in.

Alliterati Magazine

Local Newcastle based creative writing magazine Alliterati featured my little bird alongside one of their new poems from their latest issue.

"Excuse Me While I Put You On This Pedestal" by William Sebag-Montefiore

Although this isn't a new illustration, it suited the writing - and coincidentally, was created from another piece of prose, so it all ties together quite nicely :)

Compound Magazine

Happy sunday everyone!

Myself and lovely tea & crayons girls Rachel L and Abby have been featured in the very cool new Compound Magazine. The mag isn't out for general release just yet, but you can have a little looksee at the download here.

The theme set for the issue was 'Chemistry' and related to a chosen song. I love that everyone interprets theme's so differently, it's quite an eclectic mix of visuals (well worth having a browse).

My song was Friend of the Night by Mogwai.

Illustration Rally - Monaco

Illustration rally's current on-going project is illustrating all the European countries and I got Monaco! I didn't know much about Monaco before I started this I thought it was just all about the formula 1 racing (which, I know nothing about) but it actually is quite an interesting country, very wealthy, historic and cosmopolitan.

NEW PRINT RELEASE - Drifter

I have a new print release! It seems to have taken me a while to get around to announcing this, but here it is at last :)

'Drifter' Is a limited edition of 15, archival giclee print on somerset paper. Prints are a nice 8 x 8 inch size, I like quite small prints, I don't feel like they're taking over a whole wall when they're framed.

I had a couple new little greetings cards printed up, they're available on etsy now.

I made 2 designs, the first was taken from an illustration created for Tea & Crayons 'Home' theme. As the north east is where I consider home, it seemed only appropriate to create a lovely pair of magpies "Two for Joy"

Cards are blank inside and come with environmentally friendly recycled envelopes.

NARC Magazine, February

NARC, one of my favourite music magazines to design for asked me to illustrate a feature in their February issue for the Opinionated article. The piece is about over commercialised love songs - is the love song nothing more than a cheap and easy way to flog a lame tune, or is it a great medium that's been given a bad name a bunch of mediocrity-mongers

NARC is (free!) and out now and available at Electrik Sheep, The Cluny and various other shops/bars around Newcastle and the north east, so grab yourself a copy :)

Everybody meet Diana. My lomography camera! I actually gor her for Christmas but I haven't had chance to blog about it yet. This is the dreamer edition, its a nice minty green/creamy colour.

I don't have a flash for it yet but for now I'll just practice and play and hopefully take some nice pictures.

I go through phases with photography, and I seem to collect cameras, but lomography suits me because its such a simple little analogue camera, there are no complicated buttons and you can do all kinds of nifty things with it. It came with a book full of lovely photos and history of the camera and things to do so I'm feeling quite inspired.

Inspire me Tuesday

As part of my whole keeping new years resolutions I'm going to try and blog more. I like to share some of the things I find online and on my travels, so I thought I'd try and start and post things that interest me on a weekly basis. I dont know whether this'll be every tuesday yet, but probably once a week. I'll aim for a tuesday.

I'll start with these illustrations by Italian artist Noumeda. I'm extremely fickle when it comes to buying things - I'm easily swayed by the pretty packaging and immediately fell in love with these illustrations when I saw them on a range of hair products by Umberto Giannini. I use Umberto Giannini products on a semi-regular basis, its just a bonus that now they're so beautifully wrapped with lovely drawings!

Hello 2011

Happy New Year!
It's 2011! Time for a list! Just a few things I will hope to achieve over the next 12 months

1. Draw more - preferably daily.
2. Take more pictures. (I got a Diana F+ for Christmas so I intend to take many many photies this year)
3. Collaborate with interesting people (email me interesting people! Photographers, designers, writers, artists of all types!)
4. Print more. And learn all about textile printing/dyeing
5. Travel more
6. Move to London
7. Get involved with lots more creative things - crafty stalls, exhibitions, competition briefs, blogs etc.
8. Get a kitten!

I probably could go on for a while longer, but these goals seem do-able for now, so wish me luck!

2010 A reflection

Helloo! I hope you all had a lovely holiday.
It's that awkward time between Christmas and New Year where you either cause yourself stress trying to shop in the sales, or you hide out at home and watch DVDs - I opted for the latter, so I could contemplate 2010's highlights!

It's been a random year. Aside from having a mind-numbingly dull office job, my illustration work is doing well and I've had alot of really great projects.come my way this year. I've been lucky enough to get involved with Graduate Fashion Week designing the lookbook for Northumbria, it was a huge project - full of fashion related dramas, but it was an amazing to work on (and a good learning curve for me).

(May/June 2010)

I've been fortunate to have my work published in a number of magazines and blogs this year, I've loved being involved in Oh Comely, Ballad Of and Amelias - a couple of my fav mags!

In Sept. I exhibited some work at Birmingham Zine Festival and Richmix London which was alot of fun and met some interesting people (note to self: in future, don't wait til 2 days before to invite people to it!)

And more recently in October, myself and 5 other girls formed a collective Tea & Crayons, to collaborate and share illustrationy things. We've actually just been featured in the Tigerprint blog this week - have a looksee here

Company Magazine Fashion Illustration Competition

I sent off some work to Company Magazine for their fashion illustration competition last week and I made the shortlist! Along with fellow Tea & Crayons girl Abby Wright - we made the final 17!

I'm not too gutted I didn't win, I'm so happy to be short-listed with some very talented illustrators

I make a list every of my fav albums of 2010, and I can't remember if I posted it last year, but I'd thought I'd share it this year.
This year has been a really random year for music, it took me a while to narrow down my favourites, because they're all so different

I managed to get the list down to 27 and then forced myself to make a top 10, so here it is:

Blood red, shoes, Two door cinema club, The National, Radio Dept, Crystal castles, Foals, Dead weather, Arcade fire, Laura Marling, Sleigh Bells

Mine consisted of cake, hot chocolate, carousels, vintage shops, snow and Christmas markets.

I spent a few days in Bath, which was lovely. Went to a charming little place called Hansel & Gretels for coffee and Christmas decorations - it's an tiny place with a whole wall full of cuckoo clocks that chimed randomly!

I went to the V&A in London this weekend to see the Shadow Catchers exhibition. I didn't really know much about photograms and camera-free photography before, I'd seen some of these as prints but I'd never really understood how they were made. The whole process is really interesting.

SHOWCASE @ Richmix

Showcase exhibition was a success last night! Many thanks to all that came down to see the show and made my day! The show was good - if a little surreal, I wasn't expecting the improv comedy act but they were really funny!

This was the first time Showcase was at the new venue Richmix - its a really good space, much bigger than cafe 1001.

I'm taking part in Showcase London's next exhibition on the 22nd of Sept at Cafe 1001 (Brick Lane, London) so I'm busy trying to frame some work to show - otherwise I'll be presenting 2 empty panels (argh!)

It's a very Brick laney type scene so if you're in London and like art then come along! I will have some pictures for you to look at and possibly sell?!

Birmingham Zine Festival

I'm taking part in the Birmingham Zine Festival as part of the Mail Art exhibition this Sept! Hopefully I'll get to go down to Birmingham for the day and see it. I love postcards, so it was fun to draw on a postcard for this project. When the exhibition is over, all the postcards and being sent out randomly to all the artists who took part. I really wish I'd written something more original than 'hello' on the back haha. I just didn't have time to think of witty things so whoever gets mine - just pretend there's something amazing written on it ;)

Cause so much of what I do is digital, I'm not used to parting with orignal artwork so I had to scan mine in first to save myself a copy, I'll post it up here v soon!

If you're in or around Birmingham on the 10-12th Sept - pop along to the festival, there'll be fun things like printing and zines and stuff.

It's been a while since I've updated. How are you all? I've been super busy, but good busy, lots of things to do this month.

Issue 2 of Oh Comely Magazine is in WHSmiths across the country this week - go grab yourself a copy! They asked me to illustrate a feature entitled 'Lost Things' along with a few other illustrators to remember things they've lost...

Mine was a tale of magpie thieves.

I Heart Barcelona

Barcelona was amazing! Such a great city, so much of the city is inspired by Gaudi. There are some very amazing buildings. Lots of surreal things too... I saw the Salvador Dali exhibit - which was really interesting, albeit alot smaller than I had imagined.
I attempted to take a few piccies, but I forgot my camera so these are from my phone.

I had lots of fun visitng some boutiquey/vintage and antique shops along the way. I do love days filled with exploring and beautiful things.

I love hats. So I very much enjoyed this illustration for the beautiful Amelia's Magazine.

Each Milliner created a story around their final collection, the materials used were inspired by Japanese textile techniques, mechanics and traditional stories; for example Rachel Fallon’s take on Alice in Wonderland. (Read full article...)

Northumbria @ Graduate Fashion Week

Northumbria University was easily the best show I've seen at Graduate Fashion week (and not just cause I studied there, designed the brochure and my sister is presenting her collection!). Opening on Sunday night, Newcastle's finest new designers presented their collections at Earls Court and I was there at the front to witness the whole thing!

Oh Comely Magazine

Oh Comely magazine has arrived! A very shiny, new magazine, full of beautiful and quirky things, and I've been busy illustrating away for their first issue. I was asked to illustrate their feature about guerilla gardening. A project I enjoyed very much. They dug a little garden in the middle of a street in London and filled it with flowers (I have yet to see it) but the pictures look lovely)

The also sent me a tote bag and some stickers with tea pots on!

Newcastle University Fine Art Show

I went along to the Fine Art show at Newcastle University last night, there was some very interesting stuff! (Some of it a bit 'out there' but definitely worth a look at).

I discovered a fellow Craft Mafia members work at the exhibition - some very lovely birds by Amy Frampton I love that the birds were coloured with felt tip, it must've taken hours!

Also liked this ladder installation with the birdy on the top... am noticing a slight theme to this years show...

I really like this artist, but i can't remember their name.

I love that its so chaotic

Graduate Fashion Lookbook (Northumbria 2010)

So! I can finally reveal my big project I've been working super hard on for the last couple of weeks!

I was asked to design this years graduate brochure for the Fashion Design course at Northumbria University (aah my old uni... good times). There are 76 students graduating this year, so you can imagine, trying to organise 76 students portfolio images was quite a mission and a half! The book is 162 pages - and its quite a heavy book, the printers have done an amazing job, I especially love that it's bound with screws. This was such a good project to work on, I'm so happy with how it's turned out.

This is my v talented sister, Steph - she's graduating this year. I'm ever so proud! Her collection will be amazing (and as I helped cut out about a million triangles, she's promised me free stuff when she finished it woo!) (www.stephaniejayneprice.com)

Oh Comely is a magazine about people and their quirks and their creativity, rather than money and what it can buy. The first issue is out on the 27th of May.

How is it March already?! I've been a busy bee I haven't had any time to blog! I have just moved house so I have a good excuse. I just thought I'd update quickly with a drawing I've been working on for a friend of mine.

I love wolves, they're such intelligent and elusive creatures. He was really fun to draw as well. Ive decided I'm going to try and spend some quality time with my sketchbook on a daily basis from now on.

Anyhoo, I have joined folksy.... just to see what the crack is, it looks alot like etsy so far. I have some things to update my etsy shop with soon too, and hopefully I'll do some printing next week. I have soo many things on my 'to do' list, I just need to find a spare minute.
